Nighttime Ninja, by Barbara DaCosta and illustrated by Ed Young.
Nighttime Ninja follows a stealthy little ninja on his secret mission through the house in the dead of night. The tension rises as he gets closer and closer to his treasure, and just when he is just about to complete the operation … he gets a huge surprise!
Caldecott-medal-winner Ed Young’s mixed media illustrations beautifully capture the covert and camouflaged way of the ninja, and the exciting conclusion will surprise readers as much as it did the story’s mini martial artist!
The Three Ninja Pigs, by Gary Rosen Schwartz and illustrated by Dan Santat
In an effort to beat the big bully wolf once and for all, three pigs decide to study martial arts at ninja school. The first and second pig take aikdo and jiu-jitsu respectively, but quit when they realize it takes effort to become a master ninja pig. The third pig, however, takes her karate classes seriously and when the big bad wolf comes knocking at each of the pigs’ homes, her brothers coming running to her for protection and she is the only one who has a “pork chop” scary enough to get rid of the wolf.
The Three Ninja Pigs is a fun take on the classic tale that kids are sure to love. Graphic novel in feel, the illustrations are bright and expressive, and the rhyming text is catchy with a good dose of humor thrown in. The Three Ninja Pigs teaches the age-old lesson that working hard pays off and will surely be a hit (or roundhouse kick!) with girls and boys alike.
