I love this gentle story about a baby bat named Chiro who learns to echolocate. Chiro’s mother sends him off to explore, but it’s nighttime – Chiro can’t see! His mother tells him to use his “good sense” and sing into the darkness. Chiro tries it, and to his surprise, the world around him starts to sing back! With Chiro’s good sense, he can see everything – trees, ponds full of yummy flies, even a beautiful sunrise.
Loren Long’s soft, beautiful illustrations make this a perfect bedtime story, and the dark color palette and starring bat role make this a great Halloween book for the younger set. Nothing scary here – just a sweet tale of discovery, family, and bat navigation patterns.
