My Mom Is Trying to Ruin my Life…. and other perfect mother’s day books

The perfect Mother’s Day book does not have to have “Mother’s Day” in the title. There are wonderful children’s books about mothers that can double as fantastic Mother’s Day gifts.

My Mom is Trying to Ruin my Life, written by Kate Feiffer and illustrated by Diane Goode, is an accurate portrayal of mothers everywhere: the mom in the title kisses her daughter goodbye, brings her a change of clothes during school, and talks way too loudly. To the little girl in this book, however, these are all ways that her mom is completely ruining her life!  Life would be so much better for her if her mom went to jail.  But then she’d be alone, and when she wanted dinner, no one would be there to cook it, and when she wanted a bedtime story, no one would be there to read it, and when the monsters and bad dreams came, no one would be there to hug her and scare them away. Maybe it’s not such a good idea; maybe her mom isn’t trying to ruin her life after all.

How Do Dinosaurs Say I Love You? written by Jane Yolen and illustrated by Mark Teague, is a great book for your own dinosaur lover who might be an angry T-rex at times. Though he stomps and throws fits, kicks your seat in the car, and wakes up in a bad mood, he’ll still smile sweetly, and give a kiss and a hug before bed, because that’s how a dinosaur says I love you. Be sure to read and look for the different dinosaur names on each page.

Llama Llama Mad at Mama, by Anna Dewdney, is a story moms have heard a million times with their own kids.  Llama Llama goes to the Shop-o-rama with Mama, but it just turns into llama drama. Llama Llama doesn’t want to be at Shop-O-Rama, Llama Llama wants to be at home playing with his blocks and toys. Can Mama calm Llama Llama down and turn around this llama drama? Of course, because Llama Llama loves his mama.

And if you’re looking for a classic book about mothers, the Caldecott award winner, Blueberries for Sal, by Robert McCloskey, is a beautiful classic for Mother’s Day.

Happy Reading and Happy Mother’s Day!

Megan’s Pick of the Day 3/20/09

h9830My Mom Is Trying To Ruin My Life, by Kate Feiffer, Ages 3-7

Emma is convinced that her mom is trying to ruin her life! Why else would she do such shocking, embarassing things in public? Her mom kisses her all over her face! She surprises Emma at school! And she talks way too loudly! What’s a daughter to do? Stop her mother before she goes too far, that’s what! Emma hatches a brilliant plan to pedal her bike far away from her mother’s life-ruining plans. But she discovers a slight hitch: if her mother isn’t around, who will feed her? Who will tuck her in with a bedtime story? Who will chase bad dreams away? Emma makes the enlightening discovery that maybe her mom’s actions are just another way of saying “I love you.”

Kate Feiffer’s sparkling humor is accompanied beautifully by Diane Goode’s simple, colorful illustrations. This is an adorable, humorous read for moms and daughters to enjoy together–and a great warm up for Mother’s Day!

When the going gets tough…

I’m new to blogging, so when things got really busy I just stopped writing!  Every time I thought about blogging, I’d think “tomorrow.”  But here I am, somewhat back on track.   Someone I know described the process of opening a business as similar to the birthing process — you’re very excited and energized during the planning phase, and then the baby arrives, and all of a sudden you’re being pulled in twelve different directions, you’re sleep-deprived, and you’re wondering “what was I thinking?”  So I’m just waiting for the baby to start sleeping through the night — wait, no, that’s ME that needs to sleep through the night!

Lots of exciting things have been happening since you last heard from me.  We’ve gotten in lots of books, plus some CDs and plush (Corduroy and Curious George).  For those of you who remember them, we’ve ordered some of the “Choose Your Own Adventure” books, which have been reissued recently.  Ellen and I have been meeting with publishers’ reps to order books for fall and  winter, and we can’t wait to share them with you!

We’ve added another author visit to our roster — Kate Feiffer (daughter of Jules Feiffer) is coming Oct. 9 at 1:30 pm to promote her new book, “President Pennybaker,” which is the story of Luke Pennybaker, a young boy who decides to run for president to make things more fair for kids, and ends up winning the election!

We’ve also added new staff since I last blogged:  Alice Kennedy, a mother of two teenagers who just moved back to Alexandria after a year in Ireland, Laurie Winakur, mother of a kindergartner, and Maryam Yachnes, a student at West Potomac High School, who will be working after school and on weekends.  On a less happy note, Haley and Chelsea will be heading off to Grove City College, in Haley’s case for the first time.  We’re going to miss them, but wish them well at college.  We’ll still have Patrick for Saturday storytimes and  Megan in between her classes at NOVA and whatever plays in which she gets a part.
