Snapshot of an author visit

Last Friday, I took authors Jon and Pamela Voelkel to a local school to talk about their wonderfully exciting adventure books, the Jaguar Stones series.  Dressed in khaki, looking for all the world like jungle explorers, Jon and Pamela took the kids, ages 9-13, on an exciting tour of Mayan culture, rain forest inhabitants, and rocking out.  The kids learned to call like a howler monkey (they were VERY good at it!), play in an air guitar band, and, probably best of all, got to see their teachers try a snack of fried meal worms!

Personally, I learned a lot about Mayan culture, saw a lot of creatures that I’d prefer never to meet in person, and was thoroughly entertained by the multimedia show put on by the authors.  The Voelkels are charming, entertaining, and passionate about what they do — a winning combination, producing a great series for kids 9 and up.

We have autographed copies, so get them while you can!

Beware of the The Talent Thief

The Talent Thief, by Alex Williams

Children and young adults all over the world are brought together for the Festival of Youthful Genius to celebrate their talents.  Intellectual minds, renowned singers, brilliant composers, athletes of prowess converge on the city of Paralin for a weekend of display and competition of each of their respective talents.  But the host and organizer of the Festival, Fortescue, has a dastardly motive for the gathering; he plans to steal each and every one of the talents  from the youthful geniuses.

Adam Bloom, who has no real talent of his own other than his admiration of and praise for his sister Cressida’s signing ability, is accompanying her to the Festival. He stumbles upon Fortescue’s plan as well as the strange creature that Fortescue is using to steal the talents. With a former race car driver, his sister and a sheepherder by his side, Adam gives chase across the countryside to rescue and return the talents, battling avalanches, a booby-trapped mansion and kidnapping.  Will he accomplish his personal mission? What will he discover about himself during his journey?

For young folks aged 9-12, genius or not, The Talent Thief takes readers on a wild ride of adventure. The story is filled with colorful characters–both heroes and villains–and near escapes from diabolical and desperate situations. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger, driving you to read on to the end of the story. Good for reading to yourself or for reading aloud.

Pandora Gets Jealous

images1Pandora Gets Jealous is set in ancient Greece.  In this book, Pandora had  a school assignment.  Usually she brought in her father’s liver (he is immortal).  The problem is that her teacher told her that if she used the liver again she would fail.  When she got home from school, she was playing with her brother in their parents’ room when she found a box and another part to her father’s amazing story.

The next day she brought the box to school as her assignment.  Pandora told how all the evils of the world were in this little box.  On her way back home, two girls from her school dared her to open the box.  Pandora refused, but in the end the box got opened.  The second it opened, out came the evils.  Now Pandora has to get the evils back before it’s too late.

Pandora Gets Jealous is a great book!  My favorite part was when Pandora and her family put on winged shoes and flew to Mount Olympus to meet Zeus.  This book has a great plot and a lot of adventure — I can’t wait to read the sequels!
