The Penderwicks at Point Mouette

The Penderwicks at Point Mouette by Jeanne Birdsall

The third installment in the series about four sisters is bound to please fans of the previous books, as it’s filled with all the sweetness and whimsy that readers have grown to love. Summer has come back around and this year the Penderwick family is splitting up for two weeks. Dad and his new wife head to England for their honeymoon, Rosalind heads to New Jersey with a friend for some much needed “teen time,” while her sisters embark on a beach vacation with Aunt Claire at Point Mouette in Maine, leaving Skye in charge as the OAP (oldest available Penderwick).

Skye, Jane, and Batty have a wonderful time at the beach, while old friends and new make appearances at the beach house. There are, of course, “incidents” woven in to keep the summer vacation interesting. Aunt Claire hurts her ankle, leaving Skye even more in charge than she anticipated, Batty decides she wants to learn to play an instrument, Jane falls in love for the first time, and Jeffrey makes a startling discovery.

Totally charming and fantastic for reading aloud as a family this summer. The characters are all developed beautifully and the concept of children enjoying themselves without the use of technology is always refreshing!

We have all three Penderwicks books available here at Hooray for Books! and our entire staff highly recommends all three.

Grandma’s Attic series

One of Amanda’s all-time favorite classics is being reprinted!

These books are all based on stories the author’s own grandmother told her of childhood on a 19th century farm. They’re STORIES, sweet and simple, inspirational, but with character-building lessons. They remind me of the Little House on the Prairie books in term of their simplicity and the heart that obviously went into the writing. Great morals and a lot of fun!
Each story is rather short, great for bedtime reading or family read aloud. Mabel and her best friend Sarah Jane get into loads of mischief, but everything always turns out well in the end.
Great for fans of Little House on the Prairie and The Penderwicks.
In Grandma’s Attic and More Stories from Grandma’s Attic by Arleta Richardson. Ages 8-10; David C. Cook Publishing; $6.99

Ginger Pye by Eleanor Estes is an oldy-but-goody

Published nearly 60 years ago, the story of Ginger Pye, a lovable pup adopted by Jerry Pye and his family, will still enchant readers today.

Ten-year-old Jerry Pye wants to have a dog as part of the family. After earning a whole dollar from dusting church pews, Jerry readily adopts the adorable Ginger; a pup Jerry has had his eye on for some time. However, someone else has also had their eye on adopting Ginger. This “unsavory character” seems to be following Jerry, his sister Rachel and Ginger, just looking for the opportunity to snatch Ginger away from the Pye family. This opportunity presents itself over Thanksgiving, leaving Jerry and Rachel crushed. Attempts are made to find Ginger, but with no luck. As days stretch into months it seems that Ginger might not be found, but 3-year-old Uncle Benny comes to rescue just in time for Jerry’s birthday.

What makes this book such an enjoyable read is the characters and the day-to-day life of a just about a half-year in the life of the Pyes. There’s 3-year-old Benny, uncle to Jerry and Rachel, who’s a celebrity in town due to being an uncle at such a young age. There is Sam Doody, who always seems to be smiling even when he isn’t. There’s also the “perpendicular swimmer” Dick Badger who swims only by diving down to the bottom of the water and swimming back up. These characters’ world revolves around simple pleasures like swimming at the reservoir; searching “skeleton houses” (new homes that only have the framework done) for firewood; rock climbing, family picnics and fun with their dog Ginger. A great story for those who have loved books like The Penderwicks.
