I Love “I Love You So Much”

loveyousomuchI Love You So Much, by Marianne Richmond

A cute alternative to the familiar “mama do you love me theme.”   When told “I love you so much,” a young person inquires “How much is ‘so’?”  The response is a comparison to the stars and a lion’s roar.   Question follows question from the child:  how did the love start; is it everyday; even when they are far away.   The answers come in beautiful rhyme in this sweet story.   What I like most about the book is that the material touches on what happens to love when you are mad.   The answer is very reassuring.

The pages of the book are filled with bright and colorful illustrations with multi-cultural faces throughout.

Jazminne’s Picks of the Day 02/24/09

Are you tired of being picked on?  Do you wish that you could be the strongest, prettiest, or most popular kid in school?  Then you will love Bruce Coville’s Magic Shop Books.  These books are full of humor, fantasy, and adventure, and they don’t have to be read in any particular order.  For ages 8 and up!

jeremyJeremy Thatcher, Dragon Hatcher Jeremy Thatcher knows a thing  or two about raising animals.  But after he leaves Mr. Elives’ magic shop with a strange marbled egg, it soon becomes clear that this is one pet he wasn’t prepared for! How is he supposed to keep a flame-breathing dragon with razor-sharp teeth and an out of control appetite in his bedroom?  But if the playful baby dragon is ever to grow up to become a magnificent beast of myth and legend, it needs Jeremy.  And though he doesn’t know it yet, Jeremy needs a dragon.

jenniferJennifer Murdley’s Toad Jennifer Murdley had always wanted to be pretty.  That’s why she’s so surprised to leave Mr. Elives’ magic shop with a particularly ugly toad.  As her worst enemy says, “A toad for a toad.”  But this toad can talk.  And what it has to say sets Jennifer off on a journey that leads her into the company of the Immortal Vermin and straight to the Beauty Parlor of Doom…where she comes face-to-face with her deepest fears and dreams.  Jennifer would give anything to be beautiful.  But sometimes anything is too high a price to pay.

monsterThe Monster’s Ring If ever a kid needed to release his inner monster, it’s Russell Crannaker.  He’s bullied at school and he’s bullied at home, and when he stumbles into Mr. Elives’ magic shop, he’s even bullied into buying something he didn’t know he needed.  His purchase–a strange green ring– promises a monstrous magic that will make Russell bully-proof for the rest of his life. The directions for the ring are very simple: Twist it once, you’re horned and haired; Twist it twice and fangs are bared; Twist it Thrice? No one has Dared! Russell has been feeling daring lately…

Trish’s pick of the day — The London Eye Mystery

The London Eye Mystery, by Siobhan Dowd, ages 8-10

images7Ted and his older sister Kat have a love-hate relationship, but they put their differences aside when their cousin Salim mysteriously disappears from a sealed pod on the London Eye.  Ted, who has Asperger’s Syndrome and a fascination with weather, has a different perspective on just about everything, and thus notices things that others don’t.  Together, he and Kat are able to solve the mystery of Salim’s disappearance in spite the tendency of adults to ignore their ideas.

The story is told by Ted, who is an unusual and engaging main character.  I don’t know a lot about Asperger’s Syndrome, but I felt that many of its challenges were well-portrayed, as well as the positive aspects:  Ted is extremely intelligent, honest and free of prejudice.  His sister Kat is believable as someone who is exasperated by him but who loves him as well.

Published by Random House,  $15.99.  This book will be out in paperback in May 2009.

Ellen’s Picks of the Day 2/23/09

cityofthedeadReaders ages 9 to 13 (and older) who like spooky (but not nightmare-inducing) stories will want to get their hands on The Haunting of Derek Stone, a new series by Tony Abbott (whom many of you know as the author of The Secrets of Droon.)

The underlying premise of this series, as explained by 14-year-old Derek Stone, is that, “at the very moment of death, when a soul flees its dying body, another soul – one that’s been dead a long time – can take its place and reanimate the body.”  He knows this as a fact, because, in the first book, City of the Dead, the soul of a young prison guard named Virgil Black, who was killed in a train crash in 1938, takes over the body of Derek’s brother, Ronny, who similarly was killed in a train crash.

This so-called “translation” can occur because there’s a tear in the fabric between the worlds of the living and the dead, and the dead want to take full advantage of the “rift” to bring their war between good and evil to our world.  Fortunately, Virgil/Ronny is one of the good guys, because the bad guys are after Derek (who, by the way, is a little overweight and can’t hear well out of his left ear.)

bayoudogs1In the 2nd book, Bayou Dogs, which is due out in March, Derek and Virgil/Ronny learn a few things that might help them foil the comeback of the evil souls.  But this requires Derek to return to the site of his worst nightmare, Bayou Malpierre.  The suspense just gets greater and greater!

The Haunting of Derek Stone: City of the Dead by Tony Abbott $4.99 (paperback)

The Haunting of Derek Stone: Bayou Dogs by Tony Abbott $4.99 (paperback); Scholastic Press

Maryam’s Pick of the Day — The Gruffalo

gruffaloThe Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson, Pictures by Axel Scheffler

The Gruffalo is a wonderful story that your kids will be begging you to read and you’ll love to read to them.  A clever mouse is walking through the forest when all of the forest animals notice how good he looks to eat and invite him to lunch.  However, to each (the fox, owl, and snake) the mouse has to decline because he is going to have lunch with a gruffalo.  The mouse is so happy that the animals believe he is actually off the meet a gruffalo for lunch, but then, he actually runs into a gruffalo.

This story is written in a rhyme that captures the attention of children and also makes it fun to read.  This story comes in both board book and picture book, so it’s just right for all ages.

The Gruffalo, by Julia Donaldson ; board book: $6.99 ; hardcover: $16.99; Dial Books for Young Readers

Lots of learning and a sneak peek

Earlier this month I had a chance to attend the American Booksellers Association’s Winter Institute, a yearly educational session for booksellers that was held in Salt Lake City this year.  Ellen & I went to last year’s session in Louisville, KY, and found it very helpful as we planned for opening the store opening.  I was lucky enough to win a scholarship from Scholastic Books this year, which was a fabulous surprise and a boon to both me and the store.  My husband Joe went with me and skied during the day while I worked.

Winter Institute is a great place to get together with other booksellers and exchange ideas and tips.  There was a session about surviving tough economic times which offered a lot of good suggestions for small bookstores.

Loren Long

Loren Long

We were invited by Penguin Books’ Nicole White to a dinner with author and illustrator Loren Long (Toy Boat, Little Engine That Could, Drummer Boy), who was a very gentle, images6down-to-earth fellow who has a tremendous artistic talent.  We talked to him about his upcoming book, Otis, the story of a little tractor who finds his place in the world (sort of a Story of Ferdinand meets Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel).  Loren talked about some of the major influences on his work, including Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, but he also talked about how much he loves illustrating children’s books.

In the coming weeks, look in the store for our signed poster of Otis (which we’re having framed) for a sneak peek at a fabulously illustrated book coming out in the fall.

Patrick’s Pick of The Day — Frindle

frindleFrindle, by Andrew Clements (ages 8-10)

Andrew Clement’s first novel is an excellent tale of the power of words. Nick Allen is entering fifth grade, where he will face Mrs. Granger, the language arts teacher who has a no-nonsense reputation and a love of the dictionary.  On the first day of class, Nick gets an extra assignment from “The Lone Granger” on the history of the dictionary.  Learning that it is people who define words, Nick comes up with a plan for creating a new word for a pen: Frindle.   Soon Nick has all his friends using the word, much to the dismay of Mrs. Granger.  She believes that children should “learn to use the words that we already have.”  As the new word takes on a life of its own in the face of attempts to squash its use, Nick learns much more than he bargained for in this war of words.

Frindle is an excellent story for those looking for chapter books that are a level up from beginning chapter readers.  The message is a positive one for both Nick and Mrs. Granger.  Plus, the descriptions that Andrew Clements gives about grammar school life are priceless; especially those of the “villain” of the story, Mrs. Granger.
