Ellen and I have spent the past week talking to accomplished folks in the community who want to share their talents. So far, we’ve arranged to host Sushmita Mazumdar, a local writer, graphic designer and book artist who will present a workshop where participants will learn to write a story about themselves/their heritage, do research, and make a book by hand (http://web.mac.com/ajmazumdar/HandmadeStorybook.com/Home.html); Rebecca Anderson, a local French teacher who will teach a “Maman et moi” French class for toddlers (AND we’ve ordered lots of books in French, which should be here in time for the class); local photography legend Nina Tisara, joined by her son, Steven Halperson and daughter, Lynn Mills, who will teach a once-a-week digital photography class for 8-12 year olds (www.tisaraphoto.com); and last, but certainly not least, Lorenzo the Great, who will teach a magic workshop for 7-10 year olds on Saturday, July 26, from 1-2 p.m (www.lorenzomagic.com). Those of you who attended our Grand Opening will remember Lorenzo’s deft performance and the wondering faces of the children.
We’re very pleased about our current lineup of events, and are working to sign up talented silhouette artist Anne Leslie (www.shadowportraits.com), and Jennifer Stackpole of My Kissing Hands (www.mykissinghands.com), who creates custom ceramic keepsakes of children’s hands, in time for holiday gift-giving.
A bookstore should be an integral part of the community, and we feel that bringing in these local experts brings us closer to achieving that goal, so we’re excited about our plans.
